FIRST GENERATION

1. Andrew Stephens was born in 1798 in Georgia. Andrew's age is listed as 49 in the census of 1850 and 55 in the census of 1860, but he is listed as 72 years old in the census of 1870. Since both he and his wife's age was listed as 55 in 1860, and then 72 and 66 years old respectively in 1870, the later ages are used because of the deviation.

Andrew's birthplace is also believed to be Sevier County, TN, but according to the 1860 and 1870 census records of Bradley County, TN, Andrew was born in Georgia. U.S. Census record of the town of Cleveland, Bradley County, TN taken on June 9th, 1860 and the census of 1870 for the county of Hamilton, TN taken at Harrison, TN on the 30th day of July, 1870.

This same census for 1870 also lists Andrew Stephen's parents being of foreign birth. This indicates that Andrew was a first generation born American. He emigrated in 1798 from Thirteen Colonies. He was a in 1850 in Bradley County, Tennessee. Andrew was recorded as a Farmer in the census for Bradley County. The 1870 census records that both Andrew Stephen's mother and father were of foreign birth. Reason would then show that Andrew's parents came to America possibly to the colony of Georgia before his birth, possibly around 1795 or earlier.

Tax records for Bradley County, Tennessee for 1837, 1838, and 1839 lists Andrew Stephens, while others on the list owned slaves, Andrew did not own any for himself.

He was married to Katherine Stringer (daughter of Guy Stringer and Jane Stringer) in 1825 in Tennessee. Katherine Stringer was born in 1804 in Tennessee. Katherine's age is listed as 43 in the census of 1850 and 55 in the census of 1860, but she is listed as 66 years old in the census of 1870. Since both she and her husband Andrew's age was listed as 55 in 1860, and then 66 and 72 years old respectively in 1870, the later ages are used because of the deviation.
