Mariah Elizabeth Marquis was the half sister of our direct ancestor, Alexander Rhodes Marquis.

She was married to Hiram L. Moss (son of Loveless Moss and Sarah C. Stone) on Aug 5 1888 in Knights Prairie Township, Hamilton County, Illinois. They were married on a Sunday by R.M. Harrelson, Justice of the Peace. Hiram was 32 years old and Mariah was 27 years old. From their Marriage License, Hamilton County, Illinois, dated 5-Aug-1888 Book 1-6501. This was the second marriage for Hiram. He was first married to Martha J. Calvin on February 24, 1876. To that union was born three children: Elsie Josephine Moss on November 5, 1881; a son on December 15, 1883, and another son on March 7, 1888. It may be that Hiram's first wife died giving birth or very shortly thereafter since there are only 5 months between the birth of that son and his marriage to Mariah E. Marquis.

Hiram L. Moss was born in 1856 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. He was the son of Loveless and Sarah (Stone) Moss. Hiram's birth date was recorded from his grave stone, Antioch Cemetery, Hamilton County, Illinois. Birth place, Hamilton County, Illinois Marriage Records, Book 1-6501 and Certificate of Birth dated July 9, 1943 for Hiram's daughter Millie Leona Moss. He was a Farmer in 1888 in Hamilton County, Illinois. According to the Hamilton County, Illinois Marriage Records, Book 1-6501.

He died in 1938 in Hamilton County, Illinois. He was buried in 1938 in Antioch Cemetery, Hamilton County, Illinois. Grave stone inscription reads:
