"All the Ferreira's gathered tonight at 153 Oak Street (Kate and Ira Huffstutlers
home) to help Aunt Della celebrate her 70th birthday. Uncle Lee and Marge were
there, and we sat around Mom 's kitchen table laughing heartily at Aunt Della,
Mother, and Lee's reminiscences of their childhood days 'in the Knobs. '
Della told how mean Lee was to her -- chasing her with dead snakes, scaring
the horse she rode while she held a bucket of milk.... how Grandma 'Hanner' whipped
all four of them (Della, Lee, Lyman and Eileen) upon her return home from town,
or wherever she had been because they had always been in a fight in her absence.
She never had time to stop and ask for details or 'who-dunnits'. She just trounced
them all!
Lee always ran away after a lickin' and would return after dark. On one occasion,
Lyman asked why he had come back, and Lee said, 'I didn't have my hat with me.'"
