THIRD GENERATION

3. David Dodge II was born on Jul 15 1719 in Block Island, Rhode Island. David is listed in the Genealogy of Louis L. Dodge as being born in 1720, but the published work of Nova Scotia Immigrants to 1867 list him born in 1719. Since the Nova Scotia Immigrants was taken from a series of actual articles from Nova Scotia, the earlier date is used. He immigrated in 1759 to Colchester, New London County, Connecticut. David immigrated from Colchester, CT to New Minas (Sunnyside) Nova Scotia, Canada. A notation in the Nova Scotia 1770 census reflects: "After the American Revolution 25,000 Loyalists arrived, settling in various parts of the province. This was the largest single emigration of educated and cultural families known in British history. Over half of the living graduates from Harvard College were among them." He died on May 12 1783 in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was naturalized. Research about Americans in Canada was written about in the book "The Canadian Family Tree" which states: In over two hundred years of history, American immigration into Canada has been a stimulus for both political and economic activity. The most important early political movement was that of the Loyalists during and especially after the American Revolution. About one in three of the people in the rebelling colonies who had been opposed to the revolution, and many of those opposed to the new government, chose to leave after the American victory in 1782. They were called the Loyalists. There is no doubt that their concern for the maintenance of British traditions, institutions and authority was of prime significance during the British North America's formative years, particularly in the history of the Maritimes. David is listed in the Nova Scotia 1770 Census in Horton, Kings County. Listed are 2 men, 4 boys, 1 woman, and 1 girl. All told there were 8 Protestant English classified as 8 Americans.
